PRIME MINISTER PATRICK MANNING DISCLOSES LATEST NATIONAL DEVELOPMENTS TO NATIONALS OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO IN WASHINGTON DC
Washington DC: Yesterday (June 18th, 2007), Honourable Patrick Manning, Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, disclosed to nationals that Trinidad and Tobago is the world’s largest exporter of methanol and ammonia, the sixth largest exporter of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) in the world and the largest supplier of LNG to the United States. Prime Minister Manning made the disclosure at a meeting of Trinidad and Tobago nationals, hosted by the Embassy of Trinidad and Tobago at the Inter-American Development Bank Headquarters in Washington DC.
At the meeting, Prime Minister Manning outlined the details of several major development initiatives which have been undertaken by the Government of Trinidad and Tobago, including the construction of a mass transit light rail system, the establishment of ethylene and poly-ethylene plants which are the basic building blocks for the development of a plastics industry and the expansion of iron and steel production leading to the manufacture of flats and sheet metal. The Prime Minister also described the creditable economic performance of Trinidad and Tobago and stated the significant developments in the economy, including the decline of the unemployment rate to 5% in the 4th quarter of last year. He reiterated that the Government is committed to giving the majority of citizens the highest standard of living in the shortest possible time.
In outlining, the major construction projects in progress in Port of Spain, the Prime Minister emphasized that the capital city will soon be transformed to the most modern city in the Caribbean and the largest conference centre in the region. According to the Prime Minister – “The Government has set the stage for a solid economic base and the building of a solid economic platform for unprecedented socio-economic development.” “We proceed inexorably to developed nation status by the year 2020.”
Honourable Arnold Pigott, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Honourable Hazel Manning, Minister of Education also addressed the nationals.
